Are Iran the Unluckiest Side in World Cup History?

Jun 28, 02:52 PM

Iran had a place in the last 32 of the World Cup snatched away from them at the last minute not once but twice.

Iran's football history is filled with glory and regret, but when it comes to 'misfortune,' few teams can compare. On the World Cup stage, Iran has twice had their qualification snatched away at the last moment, a dramatic twist rarely seen in world football. The first instance occurred during the 1978 Argentina World Cup qualifiers. Iran performed strongly in the Asian qualifiers and seemed to have secured a spot in the finals. However, in the final round, due to a 'tactical draw' between rivals and controversial refereeing decisions, Iran suffered an unexpected defeat and missed out on the World Cup by a narrow margin. This blow plunged Iranian football into a long slump. The second instance was even more bizarre. During the 1998 France World Cup qualifiers, Iran faced another last-minute 'black comedy.' In a playoff match, Iran drew with their opponent and should have advanced on goal difference, but FIFA suddenly changed the rules, requiring a replay. Iran lost the replay and again missed the World Cup. These two experiences broke Iranian fans' hearts and gave rise to the saying that Iran is the unluckiest team in World Cup history. However, Iran did not succumb to fate. After numerous setbacks, they finally broke through at the 2006 Germany World Cup, successfully qualifying for the finals. Although they failed to advance from the group stage, Iran's performance earned respect. Since then, Iran has consecutively participated in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups, becoming a regular in Asian football. Looking back at Iran's坎坷 journey, one cannot help but ask: why are they so 'unlucky'? Perhaps it is because Asian football lacks influence in FIFA, leading to frequent rule changes; or perhaps Iran simply lacked luck at critical moments. Regardless, the resilience of Iranian football is admirable. Today, Iran is no longer the pushover they once were. They boast world-class players and mature tactical systems, holding a significant place in Asian and world football. Although past regrets cannot be undone, the future of Iranian football remains bright. Perhaps in the near future, they can truly shed the 'unlucky' label and write their own glorious chapter on the World Cup stage.
