Germany Want Klopp Talks as Nagelsmann Resigns

The German Football Association is seeking talks with Jurgen Klopp about becoming their men's national team coach after Julian Nagelsmann resigned.

The German Football Association (DFB) has made Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp its top target to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned as head coach of the national team on Tuesday. Nagelsmann stepped down after just 18 months in charge, citing personal reasons and disagreements over the team's future direction. His departure comes as a shock to the DFB, especially with the 2024 European Championship set to be hosted in Germany. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf confirmed the approach: 'We respect Nagelsmann's decision, but we must act quickly to find a suitable successor. Klopp is one of Germany's most successful coaches, and we hope to open talks with him.' Klopp, whose Liverpool contract runs until 2026, has previously expressed interest in coaching a national team. Sources close to the 56-year-old say he is open to the role, provided he is given full autonomy and a long-term project. Germany is in a rebuilding phase after a disappointing early exit at the 2022 World Cup. The team needs a coach who can instill a clear tactical identity and rebuild team morale. Klopp's high-energy style and man-management skills are seen as ideal for the young squad. However, Klopp's release clause is reportedly around €20 million, a significant sum for the DFB. Liverpool have also indicated they will not let him leave easily unless Klopp himself requests a termination. If Klopp is unavailable, the DFB's shortlist includes former Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick and current U21 coach Stefan Kuntz. But Neuendorf stressed that Klopp is the 'first choice.' Germany's next matches are friendlies against France and the Netherlands next month. Assistant coach Hannes Wolf will take temporary charge until a permanent appointment is made.
