Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a £52m deal with Brighton for Netherlands international defender Jan Paul van Hecke, who is set to leave the Seagulls.

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion for the transfer of Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, with the deal worth £52 million. The 25-year-old Netherlands international is expected to undergo a medical at Spurs and sign a long-term contract. Van Hecke joined Brighton from Heerenveen in 2021 for a modest fee of around €2 million and has since developed into one of the Premier League's most reliable defenders. Standing at 1.88m, he combines physical strength with excellent defensive awareness and ball-playing ability, making him an ideal fit for Ange Postecoglou's system. Last season, Van Hecke made 38 appearances across all competitions for Brighton, scoring two goals and providing one assist, helping the club secure a spot in the Europa League. His consistent performances also earned him a place in the Netherlands squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he featured in the group stage. Tottenham had been searching for defensive reinforcements throughout the summer window, with links to several centre-backs including Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen and Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice. However, chairman Daniel Levy opted to trigger Van Hecke's release clause, swiftly completing the £52m deal. For Brighton, the transfer represents another lucrative sale. The club has built a reputation for buying low and selling high, and Van Hecke's move continues that trend. Having paid just €2m for him, Brighton will now bank a massive profit, which they are likely to reinvest in emerging talent. Van Hecke's arrival is expected to significantly bolster Tottenham's defense. The north London side conceded 63 goals in the Premier League last season, the highest among the top ten teams. Postecoglou hopes Van Hecke will form a solid partnership with Cristian Romero, while his composure on the ball will aid Spurs' build-up play from the back. The transfer is expected to be officially announced in the coming days after the medical. Tottenham fans are excited about the signing, believing Van Hecke can become a leader at the back. Meanwhile, Brighton will continue to use the funds to identify and develop their next star defender.
