Leeds United complete the signing of defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in an £8.5m deal.

Leeds United have completed the signing of Swiss international defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach for a fee of £8.5 million. The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Elland Road, becoming the club's fourth major signing of the summer transfer window. Elvedi's arrival is seen as a crucial step in strengthening Leeds' backline. Last season, Leeds impressed in the Championship, securing promotion back to the Premier League as champions, but defensive frailties remained a concern. Elvedi's vast experience and solid defensive abilities are expected to bring a significant upgrade to the team's rear guard. Elvedi began his career at Swiss club FC Zurich before moving to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2015, where he developed into one of the Bundesliga's top central defenders. During his eight seasons at the club, he made over 250 appearances, scoring 10 goals, and earned regular call-ups to the Swiss national team, featuring in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups as well as Euro 2020. Leeds manager Daniel Farke has expressed his approval of the signing. Speaking to the club's official website, Farke said: "Nico is an experienced defender whose leadership and defensive skills are exactly what we need. He will bring stability to the team and help the younger players develop." The transfer fee of £8.5 million is considered a bargain in today's market. Leeds have been proactive in strengthening their squad since returning to the Premier League, having already secured the signatures of striker Joel Piroe and winger Jayden Bogle, among others. Elvedi himself is excited about the move. After signing, he said: "I am delighted to be a part of Leeds United. This is a club with a rich history and passionate fans, and I can't wait to play at Elland Road. The Premier League is the best league in the world, and I look forward to taking on this new challenge." Leeds fans have reacted enthusiastically to the signing, with social media flooded with messages welcoming Elvedi. Many believe his arrival will greatly enhance the team's defensive strength and help Leeds establish themselves in the Premier League. With Elvedi on board, Leeds' defensive options look more solid. As the new season approaches, the team will face intense competition in the Premier League, but with an experienced defender like Elvedi anchoring the backline, Leeds' prospects for survival look brighter. The club may continue to strengthen in the transfer market to ensure they are fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
