Annie Onions recalls her father, the team doctor for England's 1966 World Cup-winning squad, who joined the players in singing 'Back Home' on the iconic music show.

The 1966 World Cup remains a defining moment in English football history, but behind the scenes, there was an unlikely figure: Dr. John Onions, a Welsh general practitioner who served as the team doctor. His daughter, Annie Onions, now shares the heartwarming story of her father's unique role in that triumph. Dr. Onions was originally a GP in Wales when he was appointed as the England team doctor. During the 1966 tournament, he managed the players' health and injuries, witnessing every step from group stage to final. Annie recalls: 'Dad always said it was the proudest moment of his life. Even though he was Welsh, he felt immense pride for the England team.' After winning the World Cup, the England squad recorded the song 'Back Home,' which became a hit and even earned them a spot on the popular music show 'Top of the Pops.' Surprisingly, Dr. Onions joined the players in the recording. Annie laughs: 'Dad was tone-deaf, but he stood among the players and sang along. It was both hilarious and touching.' The lyrics of 'Back Home' evoke a longing for home, perfectly capturing the team's triumphant return. The song featured players like Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst, and Dr. Onions was invited to join the chorus. He felt both honored and nervous, as he later told his family. Annie still keeps a photo of her father on 'Top of the Pops.' In it, John wears a suit, standing among the players with a shy smile. 'He rarely talked about his own contribution, always crediting the players and coach. But I know he was proud to be part of that great team,' she says. Dr. Onions retired in the 1970s and passed away in 2005. But his story lives on through Annie. 'Whenever people mention the 1966 World Cup, I think of my dad. He wasn't just a doctor; he was part of history.' This anecdote highlights the unique blend of football and music. The 1966 England team not only won the cup but also connected with fans through 'Back Home.' And a Welsh doctor's participation adds a cross-border warmth to the tale. Today, Annie shares her father's story to honor unsung heroes. 'Football isn't just about the players on the pitch; it's also about those who work behind the scenes. My dad's story proves that.'
