Brighton have signed Croatia defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham for a club-record £46m on a five-year contract, with an option for a further year.

Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record fee of £46 million. The 19-year-old has penned a five-year contract with the Seagulls, which includes an option for an additional year, making him the most expensive signing in the club's history. Vuskovic, who spent last season on loan at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, impressed with his mature performances and attracted interest from several top European clubs. Brighton moved swiftly to secure his signature, beating competition from the likes of AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund. The fee surpasses the previous record Brighton paid for goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Standing at 1.93m, Vuskovic is a commanding center-back known for his physical strength, aerial ability, and composure on the ball. During his loan spell at Wolfsburg, he averaged 2.1 tackles and 3.4 clearances per game, with a pass completion rate of 89%. Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi sees him as a perfect fit for the team's high-pressing, possession-based style. The signing addresses a key need for Brighton, whose defense struggled with injuries and inconsistency last season. Vuskovic's ball-playing skills will also aid in building attacks from the back, a crucial element of De Zerbi's system. Technical director David Weir hailed the deal as a statement of intent, saying Vuskovic is a long-term investment who can develop into a world-class defender. For Tottenham, the sale generates significant funds but also means losing a highly rated prospect. However, Spurs have already moved to reinforce their defense, with the signing of Leicester City's Caglar Soyuncu and other targets in the pipeline. The £46m fee will be used to strengthen other areas, particularly midfield and attack. Vuskovic expressed his excitement upon joining: 'Brighton is a club with huge ambition, and the coach's philosophy excites me. I can't wait to play for the team and help achieve great results.' He is expected to make his debut in next week's pre-season friendly against Chelsea. The transfer has sparked mixed reactions among fans. Brighton supporters are thrilled by the club's record investment, viewing it as a sign of progress, while some Tottenham fans lament the loss of a promising talent. Regardless, Vuskovic's arrival adds intrigue to the upcoming Premier League season.
