Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room equals the record for most saves in a World Cup match, as Dick Advocaat's side earn their first ever point in the tournament with a 0-0 draw against Ecuador at the Kansas City.

In a historic World Cup group stage match at Kansas City, Curacao earned their first ever point in the tournament by holding Ecuador to a goalless draw, thanks to a heroic performance from goalkeeper Eloy Room. Room made nine saves, equaling the World Cup record for most saves in a single match, and was the undisputed man of the match. From the outset, Ecuador dominated possession and created numerous chances. In the 15th minute, Enner Valencia found space in the box but saw his powerful shot parried away by Room. Ecuador continued to press, with crosses and long-range efforts testing the Curacao defense, but Room was equal to everything, displaying remarkable agility and composure. Curacao's defense, marshaled by captain Camilo Sevillano, remained resolute throughout. Despite having less than 30% possession, the underdogs threatened on the counter-attack. Striker Leandro Bacuna had a one-on-one opportunity in the 35th minute, but Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez made a crucial save to keep the score level. In the second half, Ecuador coach Gustavo Alfaro introduced additional attackers in search of a breakthrough. Moises Caicedo struck the crossbar with a long-range effort in the 60th minute, and Felix Torres saw a header brilliantly saved by Room from a corner in the 78th minute. As the game wore on, Ecuador laid siege to the Curacao goal, but Room remained unbeatable. Deep into stoppage time, Michael Estrada turned and shot inside the box, only for Room to produce a stunning reflex save, then quickly recover to deny the follow-up. The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among the Curacao players and fans, as they secured a famous point. The result is a massive achievement for Curacao, a World Cup debutant. After losing 3-0 to the Netherlands in their opening match, they showed tremendous character to bounce back against a stronger Ecuador side. Veteran coach Dick Advocaat's game plan was executed to perfection: defend deep, use physicality to disrupt Ecuador's rhythm, and threaten from set pieces. Room's performance was the cornerstone, providing inspiration and stability. For Ecuador, the draw is a bitter disappointment. Despite dominating possession and shots, they failed to breach Room's goal. With four points from three matches, Ecuador sits second in the group, but faces a must-win final match against the Netherlands. Curacao, with one point, still has a slim chance of advancing, but more importantly, they have proven that even a small Caribbean nation can make its mark on the world stage.
