BBC Sport traces the origin story of Manchester City and Ghana star Antoine Semenyo, and hears from former coach David Hockaday about the trial which saved his career.

Antoine Semenyo, now a star forward for Manchester City and the Ghana national team, once saw his football career hanging by a thread. BBC Sport delves into his journey and speaks with former coach David Hockaday about the trial that changed everything. Semenyo's path to success was far from smooth. Born in London, he moved to Ghana as a child, where his raw talent was evident but lacked structure. Upon returning to England, he joined Bristol City's academy but was soon released due to concerns over his physique and technique. Disheartened, he considered quitting football altogether. However, fate intervened in 2016. David Hockaday, then a coach at a lower-league club, was scouting for young talent. Through a mutual friend, he learned about Semenyo and decided to offer him a trial, despite his previous rejection. The trial did not start well. Semenyo was nervous, made frequent mistakes, and nearly lost Hockaday's interest. But Hockaday recalls, 'I saw a fire in his eyes. He was desperate to prove himself, just needed time to adapt.' So Hockaday extended the trial and personally mentored him. Over the following weeks, Semenyo regained his confidence. His pace, power, and finishing began to shine, especially in a youth match where he scored a hat-trick, convincing Hockaday to offer him a contract. That contract became the turning point of Semenyo's career. Semenyo seized the opportunity. He established himself at Bristol City, then moved to Bournemouth, making his mark in the Premier League. In 2023, he joined Manchester City, becoming part of Pep Guardiola's squad. He also represents Ghana, impressing in the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers. Reflecting on his journey, Semenyo says, 'Without that trial, I might have given up. Coach Hockaday gave me a second chance, and I'll always be grateful.' Hockaday humbly adds, 'I just did what any coach would do—give a talented kid a chance.' Semenyo's story inspires young players everywhere. It proves that in football, one trial, one mentor, can change a life. Now, Semenyo aims higher, and his legend is just beginning.
