Haaland a Doubt, Semenyo Out — What Are Man City's Options?

Manchester City face an attacking selection dilemma ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash with AEK Athens, as Erling Haaland's fitness remains uncertain and Semenyo is ruled out.

Manchester City head into Tuesday's Champions League group-stage encounter with AEK Athens carrying significant uncertainty in attack. Head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed that Erling Haaland's condition is still being assessed and that a decision on the striker will be made as late as possible, while fellow forward Semenyo has been ruled out entirely through injury. The news leaves City's attacking blueprint in flux at a delicate moment of the campaign. Haaland remains the undisputed focal point of City's forward line. His finishing inside the box, physical duels and ability to occupy defenders and create space for teammates are difficult to replicate. Should he be unavailable, City would lose not only their most reliable source of goals but also the reference point around which much of their attacking structure is built. Maresca has already begun experimenting with alternative forward combinations in training to prepare for the worst-case scenario. Semenyo's absence, meanwhile, cuts into City's wide options and rotation depth. In his limited minutes this season he has offered pace, directness and the kind of thrust that keeps an attack fresh during a congested schedule. With two attackers simultaneously in question, City's forward resources are noticeably thinner than usual. From the current squad, Maresca still has several viable routes. One option is to deploy a technically gifted forward through the middle in a false-nine role, dropping deep to link play and sacrificing some penalty-area presence for greater fluidity. Another is to push wide players inside and use pace to attack the space behind AEK's back line, particularly if the Greek side defends high. A third is to promote a youth-team striker into the matchday squad — inexperienced, perhaps, but potentially a wildcard on a European night. AEK Athens should not be underestimated. The Greek side tends to be combative and well organised, defending in compact blocks and limiting central penetration. Without a finisher of Haaland's calibre, City risk dominating possession without finding a decisive edge, which could make set pieces and deliveries from wide areas especially important. The result matters considerably for City's group-stage prospects. With limited margin for error in the Champions League, any dropped points can ripple through the final standings. Balancing defensive solidity with sufficient attacking threat, given the shortage up front, will be Maresca's central challenge. Speaking before the match, Maresca expressed confidence in his squad's depth and framed the situation as an opportunity for others to step forward. Even so, the prevailing view is that Haaland's availability remains the single biggest variable in determining how the game unfolds. City's answer to their attacking question will become clear on Tuesday night.
